Web design in West Midlands

Straight-talking web design and SEO for West Midlands businesses, from a designer who has been building sites since 2004.

Web design in West Midlands

The West Midlands is home to a huge range of independent businesses, from long-established family firms in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter to newer shops and services across the Black Country and Solihull. Most of these businesses rely on local custom and word of mouth, but their customers still expect to find them online. If your website is hard to find, slow to load or confusing to use, you are losing enquiries to competitors who have got the basics right.

Good web design in the West Midlands is not about flashy graphics or winning awards. It is about giving a business a website that explains what it does, looks professional and makes it easy for a visitor to pick up the phone or send a message. Whether you run a plumbing firm in Wolverhampton, a café in Coventry or an accountancy practice in Walsall, your website should work as hard as you do.

Most people searching for a local service will look on their phone, often while they are out and about. They want to see your opening hours, your services, your prices if you publish them, and a clear way to contact you. If they cannot find that within a few seconds, they will go elsewhere. That is why every website I build is mobile-first, with straightforward navigation and a layout that works on any screen.

I'm Tim. I have been building websites for businesses across Staffordshire and the West Midlands since 2004. I work directly with you, so the person you talk to is the person who designs and builds your site. No account managers, no handovers, no jargon. Just a straightforward website that does its job.

Our web design and SEO services in West Midlands

Web Design

A new website built around your business, your customers and the enquiries you want. I design every site from scratch, so it reflects how you work rather than looking like a template.

  • Mobile-first responsive design that works on phones, tablets and desktops
  • Clear structure and navigation based on what your customers need to know
  • Contact forms, maps and click-to-call buttons to make enquiries easy
  • Content written with local search in mind, without keyword stuffing
  • Built on WordPress or as a lightweight custom build, whichever suits you

Before I start, I will ask you about your business, your typical customers and what you want the website to achieve. If you have an existing site, I will look at what is working and what needs to go.

E-Commerce

An online shop that is simple for you to manage and straightforward for your customers to use. I focus on clear product pages, sensible categories and a checkout that does not put people off.

  • Product listings with clear photos, descriptions and prices
  • Secure payments through Stripe, PayPal or your preferred provider
  • Stock management and order notifications
  • Mobile-friendly product pages and checkout
  • Training on how to add and update products yourself

You will need product photos, descriptions and prices ready before we start. If you are moving from another platform, I can help you plan the transfer without losing your existing product data.

SEO and Marketing

Search engine optimisation that helps your business show up when people in the West Midlands search for what you do. I focus on the practical side: page structure, content and local signals that Google actually uses.

  • On-page SEO: titles, headings, meta descriptions and internal links
  • Local SEO: Google Business Profile setup and optimisation
  • Content advice and copywriting for key service pages
  • Technical fixes: page speed, mobile usability and crawl errors
  • Monthly reporting so you can see what is working

SEO works best when it is built into the website from the start. If you already have a site, I will run a quick audit and tell you what is worth fixing and what is not.

Website Care

A monthly plan that keeps your website secure, up to date and backed up. You focus on running your business; I handle the technical side.

  • WordPress core, theme and plugin updates
  • Daily backups with one-click restore
  • Security monitoring and malware removal
  • Uptime monitoring with alerts
  • Small content changes included each month

Website care is for businesses that already have a site and want to keep it running smoothly. If your site is old or broken, we may need to start with a rebuild instead.

Engineering firms, wholesalers and business suppliers. A clear site that presents your products, capabilities and contact details for procurement teams.

How we work

  1. First contact

Call or email me with a rough idea of what you need. I will ask a few questions about your business and what you want the website to do. No obligation, no hard sell.

  2. Quote and plan

I will send you a fixed quote and a simple plan of what is included, how long it will take and what I need from you. If you are happy, we agree a start date.

  3. Content and design

You send me your text, photos and any branding. I design the site around that content, so it reflects your business rather than forcing it into a template.

  4. Build and review

I build the site on a test address and send you a link to review. You can request changes until you are happy with it.

  5. Launch and training

Once you approve the site, I move it to your domain, set up your email and forms, and show you how to make basic updates yourself.

  6. Ongoing support

If you want, I can take care of updates, backups and security through a Website Care plan. Or you can call me when you need changes.

Local search in the West Midlands

When someone searches for a service in the West Midlands, Google tries to show them businesses that are nearby and relevant. That means your website and your Google Business Profile need to work together. A well-built website with clear service pages, your location in the page titles and a link to your Google Business Profile gives you a much better chance of appearing in the local results.

I optimise every site for local search as standard. That includes adding your business name, address and phone number in the footer, creating a Google Business Profile if you do not have one, and making sure your site loads quickly on mobile. These are not complicated tricks; they are the basics that many local businesses miss.

If your business serves a specific town or borough, such as Dudley or West Bromwich, I will make sure that is reflected in your page content and headings. But I will not stuff keywords into every sentence. Google is smarter than that, and your visitors will notice.

What to do if your current website is not working

If your website is more than five years old, it probably needs attention. It may not work well on phones, it may be slow, or it may not show up in search results. You might be embarrassed to give out the address, or you might not know whether it is bringing in any enquiries at all.

The first step is to work out what the site is supposed to do. For most local businesses, that is simple: tell people what you do, show them you are trustworthy and make it easy to contact you. If your current site does not do those three things, it is time for a change.

I can look at your existing site and tell you honestly whether it is worth fixing or whether a rebuild would be better value. Sometimes a few changes to the layout, text and page speed are all you need. Other times it is quicker and cheaper to start again with a clean, modern site.

I work with businesses across the whole region, from Birmingham and Coventry to Wolverhampton, Walsall, Solihull and the surrounding towns. FAQs

Web design in West Midlands — FAQs

Can't see your question? Call or send a message and we'll answer it.

How much does a website cost in the West Midlands?

A starter brochure site from Thunderhat costs from £300. A growth site with SEO starts from £500. The final price depends on how many pages you need, whether you want e-commerce, and how much content you can provide. I will give you a fixed quote before any work starts.

How long does it take to build a website?

A simple brochure site usually takes two to three weeks from receiving your content. A larger site or an online shop can take four to six weeks. The biggest delay is usually waiting for text and photos, so I will give you a clear list of what I need from you.

Will my website show up on Google?

I build every site with search engine optimisation in mind: clear page titles, proper headings, fast loading and mobile-friendly layouts. That gives you a solid foundation. For competitive local searches, you may also need ongoing SEO work, which I offer as a monthly plan.

Can you redesign my existing website?

Yes. I will look at your current site and tell you what is worth keeping and what should be replaced. Sometimes a few changes to the layout and text are enough. Other times a rebuild is better value, especially if the site is old, slow or not mobile-friendly.

Do I need to be based in the West Midlands to work with you?

No. I work with businesses across the UK, but I am based in Cheadle, Staffordshire, so I am well placed to help businesses in the West Midlands. Most projects are handled by phone, email and video call, so location is not a barrier.
